This weekend we decided to go somewhere different. Our choice was the Marakele National Park in North Western South Africa.
It still amazes me what a diverse landscape South Africa has and you can literally experience every landscape from mountains to sea, deserts to jungle and still experience Africa as it was meant to be.
Marakele is a small national park but is home to the Big 5 and also home to the endangered Cape Vulture which has breeding sites in many of the mountains.
Spotting Game is difficult at this time of year as the bush is so thick due to the rain but we were still lucky enough to see Rhino, Elephant, Kudu, Warthog, Klipspringer, Baboon, Impala, Ostrich, Giraffe and a really special sighting of a fully grown Male Lion in full roar as he passed our Chalet not more than 20 metres away!
Though the Wildlife was elusive, the views were everywhere. This truly is one of the most spectacular places to visit if you want scenery. I would recommend a trip up to the towers at the top of the mountain if you are not scared of heights as the road is very narrow and there are some sheer drops.
Definitely a recommended stop on any travel itinerary and the perfect way to start a tour of Southern Africa.
